Autumn, the Metal Element & The Art of Letting Go

Kaja harmonising with nature in Queenstown.

As the golden light softens and the air begins to cool, autumn arrives in the Southern Hemisphere as a quiet invitation inward. Nature begins her gentle descent — leaves fall, energy draws down, and what once flourished starts to release. There is no resistance in this process. Only trust.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), autumn is governed by the Metal element — a powerful, refined energy that teaches us one of life’s most important lessons: the beauty of letting go.

The Wisdom of the Metal Element

The Metal element is associated with the Lungs and Large Intestine meridians.

  • The Lungs govern breath, vitality, and our connection to life itself. They invite us to take in what is pure and nourishing.

  • The Large Intestine governs elimination — the release of what is no longer needed.

Together, they form a sacred cycle:

Receive → Process → Release

On a physical level, this relates to breath and detoxification.

On an emotional and spiritual level, it speaks to our ability to hold on… and to let go.

When the Metal element is in balance, we feel:

  • Clear and focused

  • Grounded yet light

  • Able to process emotions without becoming overwhelmed

  • Connected to a sense of inner worth and self-respect

When imbalanced, we may experience:

  • Grief, sadness, or lingering emotional heaviness

  • Difficulty releasing the past

  • Shallow breathing or low energy

  • A sense of disconnection from self

Autumn, then, becomes an opportunity. A sacred window to clear space — physically, emotionally, and energetically.

The Spiritual Symbolism of Autumn

Autumn is not an ending — it is a refinement.

It teaches us:

  • To release attachments that no longer serve us

  • To honour cycles, rather than resist them

  • To find beauty in simplicity

  • To trust that letting go creates space for renewal

There is a quiet maturity in autumn. A wisdom that comes from experience.

It is the season where we are invited to ask:

What am I ready to release?

What am I holding onto that is ready to fall away?

Just like the trees do not cling to their leaves, we too are guided to soften our grip.

Nourishing the Body in Autumn

In TCM, eating seasonally is a powerful way to support balance. Autumn calls for warm, cooked, grounding foods that are easy to digest and help moisten the lungs (as this season can bring dryness).

Foods to favour:

  • White and pungent foods (associated with Metal):

    • Garlic, onion, leek, ginger

  • Lung-nourishing fruits:

    • Pears, apples, figs

  • Root vegetables:

    • Sweet potato, pumpkin, carrots

  • Whole grains:

    • Brown rice, oats

  • Lightly spiced, warming meals:

    • Soups, broths, slow-cooked dishes

Hydration & moisture:

Autumn dryness can affect the skin, throat, and lungs — so include:

  • Herbal teas (ginger, chamomile, chrysanthemum)

  • Warm water with lemon

  • Stewed fruits

Eating in alignment with the season supports not just physical health, but emotional resilience and energetic harmony.

A Deep Inner Reset: The Role of Yin Yoga

Just as autumn invites stillness in nature, our bodies and nervous systems crave the same.

Yin Yoga is the perfect practice for this season.

Slow, meditative, and deeply restorative, Yin works into the connective tissues and meridian lines — particularly the Lung and Large Intestine pathways activated during autumn.

Through long-held, supported postures, we begin to:

  • Gently stimulate energy flow through the meridians

  • Release stored tension and emotional residue

  • Regulate the nervous system

  • Cultivate stillness and inner awareness

It is here — in the quiet — that the real healing happens.

Sound Healing & The Power of Frequency

When paired with sound healing, the effects are amplified.

The soft, feminine tones of:

  • Crystal singing bowls

  • Chimes

  • Rainsticks

…work on a vibrational level to calm the mind, soothe the body, and guide you into a deeply meditative state.

Sound bypasses the thinking mind and speaks directly to the body’s intelligence — supporting emotional release, energetic clearing, and a profound sense of peace.

Why a Monday Night Ritual?

How we begin our week matters.

A Monday Night Yin Yoga & Sound Healing ritual becomes an anchor — a sacred pause before the momentum of the week takes over.

Instead of rushing in, you arrive grounded.

Instead of carrying stress forward, you release it.

A regular practice allows you to:

  • Continuously clear emotional and energetic build-up

  • Strengthen your connection to breath and body

  • Create space for clarity, intuition, and intention

  • Support long-term nervous system regulation

Over time, it becomes more than a class —

It becomes a ritual of return

The Medicine of Slowing Down

In a world that constantly asks us to do more, autumn gently reminds us:

You don’t need to hold it all.

You don’t need to carry everything forward.

There is power in pausing.

There is healing in softening.

There is transformation in letting go.

And when you give yourself the space to release —

you create room for something new to emerge.

An Invitation

This season, gift yourself the opportunity to align with nature’s rhythm.

To breathe deeper.

To soften your edges.

To let go of what you’ve outgrown.

And to return — again and again — to a place of calm, clarity, and quiet strength.

Your body knows the way.

Your breath will guide you.

All you have to do… is begin.
