Fill Your Inner Cup: 10 Powerful Ways to Nourish Yourself Energetically, Mentally & Emotionally
By Kaja – Mama, Yoga, Qi Gong & Pilates Teacher, Reiki Master, Massage Therapist & Founder of Tama Yoga
As women, mothers, fathers, parents, partners, carers, business owners and empaths, we’re often incredible at looking after everyone else.
We remember birthdays, organise family schedules, support friends through difficult times, meet deadlines, volunteer, nurture our children and somehow try to squeeze in time for ourselves.
Sound familiar?
For years I believed that constantly giving was a sign of strength. As a yoga teacher, Reiki Master, massage therapist and wellness facilitator, I naturally wanted to help everyone around me. But over time I learnt one of the most valuable lessons of my life:
You can’t pour from an empty cup.
When our cup is empty, everything feels harder. We become reactive instead of responsive. We lose patience, creativity and joy. We become exhausted, disconnected and overwhelmed.
The beautiful truth is that filling your own cup isn’t selfish—it’s one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself and the people you love.
Here are ten practices that continue to support me every single day.
1. Protect Your Energy
Not everyone deserves unlimited access to your energy.
Being kind doesn’t mean saying yes to everything. Healthy boundaries create healthy relationships.
Notice which conversations leave you feeling inspired and which leave you emotionally drained.
It’s okay to decline invitations.
It’s okay to say no.
It’s okay to choose peace.
Your energy is precious.
2. Make Rest Part of Your Routine
In today’s world we’re celebrated for being busy.
Yet our nervous systems were never designed to be switched on all the time.
Rest isn’t laziness.
Rest is where healing happens.
Whether it’s Yin Yoga, Yoga Nidra, meditation, an afternoon nap or simply sitting quietly with a cup of tea, your body needs moments where it feels completely safe to soften.
Sometimes doing less allows us to receive so much more.
3. Reconnect with Nature
Nature has always been one of my greatest teachers.
Living and teaching beside the ocean reminds me daily that everything has seasons.
The tides rise and fall.
The moon waxes and wanes.
The sun sets so it can rise again.
Spend time walking barefoot on the earth.
Watch a sunrise.
Swim in the ocean.
Sit beneath a tree.
Allow nature to regulate your nervous system without asking anything of you.
4. Move Your Body with Love
Movement should feel like a celebration—not punishment.
Forget burning calories.
Instead ask yourself:
“What would feel nourishing today?”
Some days that might be a strong yoga flow.
Other days it may be a gentle Yin practice, stretching, dancing in your kitchen or a walk by the beach.
Listen to your body rather than fighting it.
Your body is your lifelong home.
Treat it kindly.
5. Nourish Your Mind
Your thoughts become your inner environment.
Be mindful about what you’re consuming.
Read books that inspire you.
Listen to uplifting podcasts.
Reduce time spent scrolling.
Learn something new.
Spend time with people who expand your thinking and encourage your growth.
Protect your mental space just as carefully as your physical one.
6. Feel Your Feelings
Healing isn’t about avoiding difficult emotions.
It’s about allowing them to move through us instead of becoming stuck.
Cry when you need to.
Journal.
Talk with someone you trust.
Meditate.
Receive a massage.
Book a Reiki session.
Emotions are simply energy in motion.
The more we honour them, the lighter we become.
7. Practise Gratitude Daily
Gratitude gently shifts our focus from scarcity to abundance.
It doesn’t ignore life’s challenges.
It simply reminds us that beauty exists alongside them.
Every day I try to notice simple moments:
The warmth of the morning sun.
My daughter’s laughter.
A beautiful student relaxing deeply during Savasana.
A warm cup of herbal tea.
The sound of waves meeting the shore.
These ordinary moments often become life’s greatest treasures.
8. Surround Yourself with People Who Fill Your Cup Too
Relationships should feel reciprocal.
Notice who celebrates your wins.
Who listens without judgement.
Who makes you laugh.
Who helps you feel safe enough to be yourself.
Energy is contagious.
Choose relationships that leave you feeling lighter, not heavier.
9. Create Small Daily Rituals
Healing doesn’t always happen during week-long retreats.
It often happens in five-minute rituals repeated consistently.
Light a candle.
Diffuse your favourite essential oils.
Take five conscious breaths before checking your phone.
Pull an oracle card.
Stretch before bed.
Drink your tea without distractions.
Small rituals create lasting transformation.
10. Make Joy a Daily Practice
Joy isn’t something we find once everything is perfect.
It’s something we intentionally create.
Laugh.
Dance.
Watch the sunset.
Listen to live music.
Spend time with children.
Play.
Create.
Joy raises our energy more quickly than almost anything else.
Life is meant to be experienced—not just managed.
A Gentle Reminder
As a mum, partner, healer and wellness facilitator, I’m still learning these lessons every day.
Some weeks my cup overflows.
Other weeks I notice it’s running low, and that’s my reminder to pause, breathe and come back to myself.
Your wellbeing isn’t another task on your to-do list.
It’s the foundation from which everything else grows.
When you care for yourself with compassion, you naturally have more love, patience, energy and presence to offer the people around you.
Fill your own cup first.
Everyone benefits.
